Deep work
Deep work is a concept introduced by author and computer science professor Cal Newport in his 2016 book "Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World." The idea revolves around the practice of engaging in cognitively demanding tasks for extended periods of time with minimal distractions, allowing for maximum focus and productivity.
Deep breaks
Getting into the focused state where deep work can take place usually takes some time, so it is desirable to keep it going for as long as possible once getting there. However, it taking short breaks can also help to stay productive (See the Pomodoro technique). So how does one take breaks without breaking focus and getting distracted?
In a blog post Cal Newport shares some desirable traits of what he calls deep breaks:
- Avoid turning attention to sources of obligations like email, chat apps, etc.
- Avoid turning attention to things that can easily drag out like reading news or other websites.
- Avoid turning attention to things that are too closely related to the thing you're currently trying to stay focused on
- Avoid turning attention to complicated, stressful or urgent things.
- Keep the break short.
